The Hand of Ethelberta
The Hand of Ethelberta, a lesser known novel by Thomas Hardy, has as the venue of its 31st chapter, the ruins of an ancient castle known in reality as Corfe Castle. The town of Wareham, Dorset, UK is at the foot of the Corfe Castle hill. I am traveling by rail from London to Wareham on January 22, during a layover on my way to New Dehli to meet Tony Blake, a local photographer, and hike and photograph the area. In the surrounding country side, author Hardy found the inspiration for Far From the Madding Crowd, Mayor of Casterbridge, Tess of the D'Ubervilles and other well know works.
