The Monro Beach Track is a beautiful rain forest, reminiscent of Costa Rica but with many subtle differences. First of all, New Zealand keeps these tracks extraordinarily well maintained. Where the natural flow of rain water creates a small stream, New Zealand makes sure the stream can continue by placing plastic pipe beneath the walkway. The trail itself was graveled with fine gravel and was very comfortable for walking. All the edges were stones to prevent erosion. The signs directly you where to go were clear and unmistakable.

How the path, however, the forest seemed absolutely untouched. I would believe that it is the same as it was a 1,000 years ago.

In some places, the little creeks that form have very brownish water. That, I am told, is because of the tannin that is in the bark of some of the trees in the forest.

The little beach where some small number of the penguins come every June through December is a fine sand and the waves crash up onto the rocks.
