We have booked a Caribbean cruise for next September. I know being out on the water is dangerous, especially with pirates these days, but the ship is a good ship. It was built a long time ago from good plans by excellent ship builders. Lately it seems a little in need of repairs but that doesn’t worry me.
I looked into the captain and crew. The person in charge of passports and arrangements in the foreign countries will likely be an older lady recently promoted from the administrative department of the shipping company, but she has no foreign language skills. Her husband was head of the company at one point, but he won’t be on the cruise. Someone asked him if he would be dance director on the ship but he passed on it after finding out that most of the passengers were older.
The person in charge of safety and security on the cruise will be a lawyer from Arizona who hasn’t ever used a gun, but she has read a lot about it and feels very confident of her ability to protect us from pirates.
The rest of the crew are friends of the captain who gave him gifts last Christmas and therefore must be nice folks. They haven’t ever cruised before but heck if they are good enough for the captain, then why not?
The captain is a young guy who used to sail a small boat on lakes in Illinois and fell in love with sailing. He joined a large boat company as an observer two years ago, but spent most of his time angling to become a captain. He is so in love with sailing, you can just see it in his eyes as he tells us how great the cruise will be. He is a very very good story teller – some would even call him inspiring. We had our choice of captains but most of the passengers liked the story teller a lot more than the crusty old alternative, even though the old guy had sailed around the world for most of his life on every kind of ship and had been in some pretty dangerous storms and ports. Oh well, the passengers said, if you want to have fun on a cruise, you should have a captain that makes you feel good about the cruise not some boring old sailor who knows how to navigate through storms.
Oh, I forgot, and this is why I am writing you, I heard it is hurricane season in September in the Caribbean. Do you think I ought to cancel the trip?
