Lake Rotoroa Lodge

Mataturi River is filled with rocks and boulders. I climbed over most of these today to catch fish.

Poachers on the Mataturi River near Lake Rotoroa Lodge, South Island, New Zealand. They were reported to authorities.

This is an aerial view of the Lake Rotoroa Lodge which is located about 1 hours drive south of Nelson NZ on the south island. The view out my bedroom window is out on to the lake. I will post it later today.

Lake Rotoroa Lodge. Scott Murray spots large trout hidden in heavy riffles. He is grizzled from playing professional rugby and years of wet-wade guiding. He can put you on fish (mostly browns); the rest is up to you. He guides for Lake Rotoroa Lodge, a 80-year-old woodframe place that has recently been restored to Victorian-period elegance by Shackleton Ltd. and serves some of the best big-trout streams (26 reached by road and 18 by helicopter) on the South Island--most fished by dry-fly fishing.

This region near Murchison has great golf courses and the South Island wine vineyards and is unique for several reasons: The lodge is located in a beech forest on Lake Rotoroa at the edge of Nelson Lakes National Park. The walk-in fishing (to 4.7-pound browns on average) is a sight-fishing adventure conducted by some of the island's best guides. The lodge also offers hiking, rafting on the Gowen River, and horseback riding. A special time to fish this area is in March, when the red stag roar (mating season) is on and bellowing males wake you for a morning of fishing. The Victorian ambience of this lodge (with Val Atkinson photos on the wall) is special. Two of my most exciting large browns ever caught were taken here with guide Scott Murray.
