Finding the Penguin - Well Not Quite

It rained heavily most of the morning here at Moeraki Lake. Beautiful mist formed on the tops of the surrounding hills. No way to hike much here. I decided to try the other side of the hill over in Haast. Not much there either, except for a visitor's center and a grocery store. I bought some potatoe chips to go with my sack lunch from the lodge and went exploring. It rained.

Then for a brief time the rain stopped. I pulled over to a small visitor area called Ship Creek and found a delightful beach strewn with driftwood.

I sat on a log and ate lunch and watched the Pacific flow lazily on and off the beach.

Here is a picture of a representation of a crested penguin from the visitors' center. Cool looking bird. Just not any around at the moment. Sphere: Related Content
